Program Day and Time: Tuesday and Thursday from 6 pm to 7:30 pm

Duration: October 14th, 2025 to April 16th, 2026

Program Location:

Ecole Cathedrale (Enter through the side door just past the small parking lot)

Program Description

All athletes grade 7 (will consider grade 6) through to Masters welcome to join our throws program.  No prior experience is needed.  We throw discus into a net and indoor shots across the gym.  We work on hammer turns but are unable to throw the hammer.  Any questions contact Melody (mt@queensu.ca).

What to Expect:

  • The number of athletes at a given practice varies based on commitments, generally 4-8
  • The level of ability varies from never having thrown before to having thrown for many years, so approach is tailored to the individual.
  • Only one athlete throws at a time (1 – discus; 1 – shot) so the person throwing gets the coach’s undivided attention.
  • Feedback is given immediately after a throw.  Depending on the individual, specific drills may be given for the athlete to do before their next throw.
  • Progression is specific to the athlete.  Drills are selected based on what level the athlete is at and what the athlete needs to work on.
  • For athletes doing both shot and discus, half the practice is focused on discus with coach Tim Fawcett, and half on shot with coach Melody Torcolacci.  The athlete can start with either event.  We usually try to balance numbers in each group, so a given thrower gets maximum attempts before shifting to the other event.
  • For those keen on learning hammer, we introduce turn work after the Christmas break, usually the last 10-minutes of a practice session.

General Practice Structure

  • We start with a thrower specific warm-up.  If the athlete doesn’t have one, we take them through one, which they can later more specifically tailor to their needs.
  • We start with standing throws or progressions to get the athlete to a standing throw.
  • How quickly an athlete progresses is individually dependent.  A beginner may spend the initial few practice sessions working on mastering the stand, while more advanced throwers would move on to progressions designed to get them to a full throw.  Time spent at each progression level is based on how quickly the athlete gains a workable level of competence.
  • As the season progresses, less time is spent on basic introductory drills and more on advanced level drills.
  • Time focus shifts from the standing throw to more full throws as the season progresses.

Test Competitions

  • For the shot putters we usually have a “practice” competition before the Christmas break, and several in the New Year.  These are to see how the athlete is progressing and how they respond to competition demands.  Depending on how the athlete does, it focuses the next few practices on drills to help the athlete improve a specific aspect that broke down under “pressure”.  Specific sport psychology strategies can also be provided to the athlete.

Main Objectives

  • To prepare the athlete to be able to compete to the best of their ability at the level of competition they are focused on (Elementary School Championship, KASSAA/OFSAA, other).
  • We encourage everyone to participate in the District G Meet (Brockville, mid-June) as it is the Eastern Ontario team qualifier for the Ontario Legion Meet.  Usually the winner, occasionally second place finisher in an event is selected to the Eastern Ontario Team.  The Legion pays for transportation and accommodation to the Ontario Meet.  It is an incredibly positive experience for those that earn the privilege.
  • Personal bests are celebrated and the primary measure of success.

*******************************

*Athletes can take part in both track and field training for one fee.

The Club offers both development and competitive registration. Development athletes
focus on form, strength, execution and overall fitness improvement while competitive
athletes are provided workouts with additional focus on their chosen discipline and
competition plans.

As a competitive athlete, you will be able to attend Provincial championship meets and
potentially National competitions. Your coach will provide training sessions that focus on
your personal athletic needs for continued improvement and the club will ensure that
you have qualified coaches in attendance at championship meets.

Development athletes will have the opportunity to attend non-registered regional meets such as
Legion and Twilight. Development athletes, in consultation with their coach, may choose
to move up to a competitive membership provided additional fees are remitted.

The Club believes deeply in inclusion and opportunity and therefore all athletes,
competitive and development, will continue to train together.
